Alois Krcha Stories

1933, London: A Reunion with Harry Craddock

In London, Alois found refuge with an old friend from New York, Harry Craddock. The bartender of the legendary The Savoy hotel and author of The Savoy Cocktail Book introduced Alois to the secrets of an establishment that was setting global trends at the time. During the renovation in 1927, Craddock apparently hid a silver shaker containing the White Lady cocktail inside one of the walls — a time capsule intended for future generations of bartenders.

Alois’s curiosity wouldn’t let him rest. He crept around the bar, inspecting every corner and nudging each brick, hoping to uncover the mysterious shaker. No luck. He did manage to coax the exact recipe from Craddock though — gin, orange liqueur and lemon. According to his diary, Alois later adapted the recipe to his own taste. While he always acknowledged Craddock’s original, he couldn’t resist putting his own signature on the drink. Legend has it that the silver shaker remains hidden somewhere within the walls of The Savoy to this day.
